Most people’s first reaction is to unplug the console and either carry it to the shop where they bought it, or to send it in to Microsoft for repair. But there are other solutions to the problem and best of all, chances are good you might be able to fix the problem yourself.
The XBOX 360’s most common problem is overheating. Although the machine comes with several mechanisms installed to prevent overheating, extreme temperature conditions can result in the console heating up to the point where it will shut itself off.
The most common source of the XBOX 360 3 red lights error however are soldering points that have come loose. This happens when the main board heats up during play and bends. Today’s (lead-free) tin-solder tends to crack rather easily resulting in loss of electrical flow at the point where the solder broke. If the console heats up frequently to high temperature, such as during extended gaming sessions, soldering points can break resulting in the (seemingly) fatal hardware error.
If your XBOX 360 is showing the 3 red lights you have two options:
A) Send the console in for repair
B) Fix it yourself
Option A has its downsides: you will have to send in your XBOX to Microsoft and you will most likely have to wait several weeks to get it back. If your console is out of the warranty period, you might have to pay $140 to get it fixed. Microsoft extended the warranty period in July 2007 regarding hardware failures, but this guarantee will probably not last forever.
Option B would be favorable as in 90% of the cases you should be able to fix the problem yourself with the help of one of the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ebooks available on the web and maybe some tools from Radio Shack.
