Correspondence Audits And You
Conducted through the mail, a correspondence audit is commenced when the IRS computers uncover a questionable item on your tax return. You’ll be told of the discrepancy on an IRS notice and you will be asked to send documentation to support your return. You will either be given a refund or requested to settle the additional taxes if the error is mathematical.
Be ready against IRS problems and audits by always making copies of your tax return and the supporting documents. It is best to work with a correspondence audit.
No matter what the request is, make sure you compare your copy of the return with what’s written on the IRS notice in order to verify the need for a correction or the need of additional taxes. Investigate further before mailing the requested additional taxes to the IRS. The IRS can make mistakes as well.
Read the IRS notice carefully and follow the instructions. Dismissing it will only make matters worse.
Sign and date the notice and send it with your payment if you agree with it. If you disagree with it, follow the directions on the notice. Don’t go beyond the stated due date. Include copies of documents that’ll support you.
If you disagree with the notice, the IRS will evaluate your claim, and if it is allowed, you’ll be contacted and the audit with stop. An Examination Report is sent to you if the IRS disallows your claim, and you have 30 days to accept the changes and sign it or request for an appeal.
The name and telephone number of the auditor assigned to the case will be on the IRS notice, so you may call him for inquiries about the audit.
