How Well Did Arsenal Fair Last Season?
The Gunners had a relatively average season last stem as they appeared to be in a transitional state. It began with people not knowing if the Emirates stadium will be like the fortress Highbury and in a way it was, as they lost only 1 game at home last season and that was fluke to West Ham as they totally dominated the game.
But they had to come from 1 goal deficit, way too many times for comfort. It was not all doom and gloom though as they were able to introduce to the public, yet again, another array of young talent which appears to be never ending from their conveyor belt. The likes of Diaby, Denilson and Walcott had fine seasons.
Injuries to key players, especially Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie, were probably the main reasons for their faltering form in the premiership. Also the defence was never settled at any time in the season as injuries to key players like Gallas and Eboue was a deciding factor. As they lost goals they normally would not have in games.
The high points of the season were the wins at Anfield in both the Fa Cup, 3-1 and the worthington cup were they won 6-3 with a Julio Baptista hat-trick and also missing a penalty in the same game. The 4-0 demolition of Reading at the Madjeski stadium saw them at their brilliant best. And, of course, they did the double over eventual champions Manchester United.
The low points were obviously going out early in the Champions league against PSV Eindhoven, losing the Worthington cola final to Chelsea 2-1 was bad enough but the poor discipline shown by Adebayor and Eboue amongst others left a bitter taste. Losing 1-0 to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, though they were playing against 10 men and United had an outfield player in goal.
Losing to West Ham at Upton Park was a very low point as well, not just for the result but also for the hilarious spat between Arsene wenger and Alan Pardew.Going out of the FA cup tamely to Blackburn was another low point.
There were however outstanding individual performances as Fabregas was yet again outstanding; Denilson was very good when he was given a chance as was Diaby. Clichy and Adebayor were very impressive as was Van Piersie earlier on but perhaps the player of the season and he would surely get my vote was Gilberto Silva.
He was commanding in the games I saw him and came up with some many goals, I was not sure if it was indeed the same player of seasons gone by. The disappointing performances include, Henry who never really got going, Gallas who was always injured, Baptista, who for a Brazilian, has a very poor first touch, Walcott, whose final ball is at this stage very poor and Eboue who, due to injuries, did not build on his very impressive first season.
