Stress Asks You To Step Out Of Time
Aligning ourselves with the theory that the nature of perception causes stress raises many questions and, also, great hope. If the foundation of the stressors in our lives is created by our own mind’s ability to put us into motion, then perhaps we have enough power to stop the creation or, at least, alter it. And so, the next natural question is “How?”
To find the answer we must go to a place that doesn’t appear to exist on this earth - and yet, it does. We must go outside of time. Time is one of the biggest stressors we experience. Because we are “ruled” by time, we often feel we do not have enough of it or that it will “run out” on us. We talk about how fast the years pass and that we don’t know where time has gone. When we are grieving or waiting, time weighs heavily and feels to move almost in slow motion. Nearly every stressful situation has a common factor involved in its energetic dynamic - time and how we perceive its use. True inner peace exists only outside of time and it is to that place we wish to go to replace the stress our minds, hearts, bodies and souls are experiencing.
Stepping outside of time requires one more action from us. It requires that we intentionally “not do” or place ourselves in a state of “non-doing”. Actuating a state of inner stillness for even two minutes carries with it a tremendous amount of peace, calm, relaxation and is a very centering experience. It brings awareness of the present-moment. We stop thinking about what just happened. We are no longer worrying about what might happen in the future. We are not steaming over someone else’s inadequacies in driving or filling out their bank deposit form. We are not meeting a deadline (what a great word!). We are simply being - for two minutes, or five or ten or for whatever period of time we wish to step out of time and be.
Being out of time and in a state of awareness places us in the one place there is no stress - the present moment. Our daily experience of time passing is very subjective and is linked to the activity of our minds and our thoughts. We think about the past and the future as we build our stressful moments filled with regret or anticipation. Since time is measured as the space between our thoughts and their infinite stream, when we step out of our thought patterns, we step out of the stream of time. The new pattern of being in no-time is known as mindfulness.
The daily practice of mindfulness allows us to make each moment our own. Simplifying our lives in even little ways can make a big difference. The very act of bringing simplicity into our lives causes us to stop and consider what we might give up to have more time on a daily basis. The choice brings a certainty of what we wish to keep, the value of how we spend our time and creates a space to preserve in the peace of silence.
Everyone probably knows the time-worn phrase “Time is money“. Perhaps it would be helpful to consider whether we might not give up a bit of money to have more time. Once we have more time and feel less the need to make so much of it, we might consider taking that step out of time to see how it feels. And how it feels is what we call balance. We are centered within, stand firmly without and do not loose our equilibrium when we perceive a challenging experience coming our way.
The calm, relaxation and peace that come from letting go of time alter our experience of time when we step back into it. It becomes possible to flow along with the stream of time and our thoughts rather than feeling driven by it. The more we practice allowing space for non-doing, the more it infiltrates our day and our thoughts. No matter what is experienced, we can be centered in perceiving and accepting it for what it is. The future can be viewed without losing perspective or feeling anxious. We can move forward into that future with our doing coming from our inner being, out of peace and in balance.
